Greg Konkel, President/Chief GIS Consultant

greg.jpg (23591 bytes)Greg is company President and serves as project manager and chief GIS consultant.   He established the firm in 1993 to fill the increasing need for GIS services in support of environmental studies and land use planning in the Pacific Northwest.  In addition to being a recognized expert in GIS, he is a highly qualified fish and wildlife biologist who has specialized in computer applications for more than 20 years.  In the late 1970s, he developed several computer-based habitat suitability models for important fish and wildlife species in Alaska.  In the early 1980s, he helped the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Alaska Region establish GIS capabilities and served as project manager for all fish and wildlife applications.  In the mid 1980s, he developed a large geographic database of salmon spawning records, analyzed trends in hundreds of salmon populations throughout the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, and published his findings in a scientific paper.  This database is now a major component of the Columbia River Coordinated Information System.   In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Greg worked as a mid-level manager with the Washington Department of Fisheries, initially in charge of technical services in the Marine Fish Program and later in charge of forest practices in the Habitat Division.  He was chiefly responsible for introducing GIS into the Washington Department of Fisheries and represented the agency on the State Geographic Information Council for three years.  In the Marine Fish Program, he supervised a major redesign of two key agency databases and managed a GIS pilot project for the agency directorate.  In the Habitat Program, he pioneered the application of GIS to the watershed analysis process used widely in the Pacific Northwest.  With his dual background, Greg has the unique ability to bring computer technology to bear on natural resource issues with a full understanding of the scientific context.  Please check out Greg Konkel's Home Page.

Education:  Greg has an M. S. degree in forest resources management from the University of Washington and a B. S. degree in wildlife management from Humboldt State University, California.

Dale Gombert, Vice President/GIS Specialist

dale.jpg (21073 bytes)Dale is Vice President and co-founder of NWGIS.  He has a thorough knowledge of GIS and cartographic concepts, and is an expert user of ARC/INFO GIS software.  He has received specialized training in ARC/INFO and has substantial hands-on experience.  As a GIS Specialist with NWGIS, Dale did nearly all of the digitizing and much of the other technical GIS work on completed projects.  He is extremely fast and efficient at digitizing, while maintaining high quality standards.   Dale has about nine years of experience in GIS.  As a GIS consultant for the Washington Department of Fisheries, he completed several projects and had lead responsibility for creating a Marine Resource Atlas for Washington State.

Education:  Dale has a B. A. degree from the University of Maryland and has received specialized training in ARC/INFO.

Rob Simmonds, GIS Analyst

Rob joined NWGIS in November 1997.  Prior to working for NWGIS, he served for seven years as a GIS analyst with the U. S. Forest Service in Portland, Oregon, providing telephone and on-site support to ARC/INFO users throughout the Pacific Northwest.  He developed AML macros and documentation for the enhancement of GIS applications.  He also worked with National Forests to support their efforts to convert large amounts of GIS data between hardware/software platforms.  Prior to this, Rob worked for one year as a GIS technician with the Washington Department of Natural Resources in Sedro Woolley where he digitized forest inventory, activity, and timber sales data and produced maps and reports.

Education:  Rob has a B. A. degree in geography and GIS from Central Washington University.
